The UMBC men's soccer squad opened the 2026 season on Thursday, August 20, at Retriever Soccer Park, hosting UNCW at 1 p.m. The match was moved up to accommodate weather concerns that threatened later scheduling.
Alongside the familiar faces, the Retrievers welcomed fifteen newcomers, comprising seven freshmen and eight transfers, signaling a significant roster overhaul as the program looks to build on recent progress.
Leadership and Fresh Talent
Veteran leadership will be provided by captains Adamo Pantaleo and Tancredi Fadda, both of whom bring experience and a proven track record to the defensive line. Returning standouts such as junior forward Gunder Miller, who contributed a goal and an assist in 2025, and sophomore midfielder Shawn Shvartshtein, a 2024 All‑Rookie Team selection, add depth and continuity to the lineup.
The team finished the 2025 campaign with a 6‑6‑5 record, securing the fifth seed in the America East playoffs before falling in a penalty shoot‑out to New Hampshire, a result that left the coaching staff optimistic about the upcoming year.
UMBC entered the preseason poll ranked fifth in the America East, reflecting both the belief in the program’s trajectory and the competitive nature of the conference.
In contrast, UNCW, known as the Seahawks, posted a 5‑9‑2 record last season, finishing 4‑4 in the Colonial Athletic Association before an early exit against second‑seeded Campbell.
Three Seahawks earned preseason All‑CAA honors — midfielder Osei Gyamfi, defender Jake Roberts and goalkeeper Trey Smiley — while Bryan Miralrio and Gavin Carmichael received honorable‑mention recognition.
