A new limited‑edition collection of purple and gold apparel has been launched to honor the memory of Parker Sutherland, an 18‑year‑old University of Northern Iowa football player who died unexpectedly earlier this year.
The line includes a T‑shirt emblazoned with the slogan “Field rivals fight together” and a cap bearing Sutherland’s jersey number 89, alongside other items that echo his collegiate legacy.
The Hawkeye Wave tradition
The Hawkeye Wave, a cherished ritual at Kinnick Stadium, invites players and fans to pause and wave to children receiving care at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital during Iowa Hawkeyes home games.
Starting now, the merchandise will be sold through the Iowa Wave website until August 25, with all proceeds directed to the children’s hospital in memory of Sutherland.
The tribute will be especially visible during the upcoming Iowa versus UNI matchup on September 19, when the wave will be performed in front of the hospital’s young patients, linking the game’s pageantry to the charitable cause.
Sutherland’s family and university officials approved the collection after discussions that underscored the significance of linking the wave to his legacy, ensuring that the design respects both his athletic achievements and the spirit of the tradition.
Sutherland’s passing on Valentine’s Day, just ten days before his 19th birthday, adds a poignant layer to the remembrance, and the purple and gold colors of the merchandise echo the university’s palette while symbolizing unity and remembrance.
