Northern Michigan University’s hockey program is gearing up for a landmark season as it celebrates its 50th anniversary, and the coaching staff has announced a substantial influx of talent.
The Wildcats will field 14 newcomers — six transfers and eight freshmen — each bringing a distinct set of skills that promise to deepen the squad’s depth, speed, and offensive firepower.
Key Transfers Bring Experience and Skill
Among the transfers, defenseman Noah Houle arrives from Clarkson after a standout stint in the ECAC, while forward Branden Piku, a Lake Superior State alumnus, contributes 44 career points and a knack for clutch performances. Forward Brendan Lamb, who captained Mercyhurst in the USHL, adds 53 points from 179 games, and defenseman Ian Engel, a former North Dakota standout, brings 63 points and a plus‑20 rating. Forward Merril Steenari, a USHL/NAHL veteran and Johnny Gaudreau Award finalist, rounds out the experienced group.
Freshmen Inject New Energy
The freshman class features Reilley Kotai, who posted 24 points in 24 games for UBC and earned USports West All‑Rookie honors, as well as Coster Dunn, a Seattle Thunderbirds alumnus with 130 points and a 2023 WHL championship, and Niklas Gudmundson, the MJHL MVP who tallied 74 points and was a CJHL MVP finalist. Defenseman Darik Olson, a top‑scoring blue‑liner with 51 points split between the Chilliwack Chiefs and Sioux City Musketeers, also joins the mix.
Coach’s Vision and Season Outlook
Head coach Dave Shyiak, now in his third year, praised the newcomers for their unique attributes and emphasized how their diverse backgrounds will shape a more competitive roster. The Wildcats open the season with a home series against Miami (Ohio) on October 2‑3, followed by road trips to Michigan State and Stonehill later in the month. A banner‑raising ceremony honoring alumni Don Waddell, Tom Laidlaw and Steve Bozek will precede the opening game, adding a nostalgic touch to the celebratory kickoff.
