Terri Piatak: Four Decades of Basketball Passion and Perseverance

From a childhood jacket to five state championship officiating roles, her journey embodies dedication to the game.

Terri Piatak, a Bishop McCort High School graduate, has spent more than four decades immersed in basketball, moving from player to coach to official with a zeal that defines her career.

In eighth grade at West End Catholic, a simple basketball jacket became the spark that ignited a lifelong love for the sport, setting her on a path that would span generations.

A State Championship Debut

During her senior year, Piatak captained the first girls’ basketball team from Bishop McCort to reach the state championship in 1977, playing point guard and showcasing the leadership that would characterize her future roles.

She continued her education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where her contributions earned her a place in the school’s sports hall of fame in 1996, cementing her status as a pioneer for women’s basketball in the region.

Teaching, Coaching, and Community Impact

After graduating, Piatak began her teaching career at Meyersdale Area School District, where she has spent 14 years instructing health and physical education while also guiding teams as a coach.

Her commitment extends beyond the classroom; she has officiated five state championships and countless high‑school and college games, including Division I contests, accumulating 40 years of high‑school officiating and 35 years at the collegiate level.

Colleagues and former players recall a figure for whom basketball is more than a game; the scoreboard serves as her alarm clock, and the court is a second home.

Piatak repeatedly stresses the importance of effort and perseverance, urging young athletes to find joy in the journey rather than merely the outcome.

A Lasting Influence

From the modest jacket of her youth to five state championship officiating assignments, Piatak’s story illustrates how dedication, hard work, and a love for the game can leave an indelible mark on a community.
