To commemorate the occasion, the school has commissioned a one‑of‑a‑kind, hand‑painted helmet that will make its debut on September 12 when the Broncos host Memphis at Albertsons Stadium. The piece was created by celebrated artist Armando Villarreal, whose collaborations span ten college football programs.
Villarreal spent more than three hours each day for two months applying textured blue turf blades, an oversized ‘40’ numeral, seven hashmarks that mark The Blue’s installations, and the retro Boise State logo. Each element was hand‑crafted to reflect four decades of tradition, innovation, and fan pride.

Gene Bleymaier’s 1980 decision to reshape Boise State Athletics set the stage for this cultural phenomenon, a legacy that continues to influence how modern programs think about branding and fan experience. The Blue’s global recognition has turned the stadium into a pilgrimage site for supporters worldwide.
The helmet will be offered to Bronco Athletic Association members through a priority‑ranking system, and its imagery will appear on a range of merchandise — from t‑shirts and hoodies to caps — available at The Blue and Orange Store and the Bronco Shop. The design will also be featured on the official 2026 Boise State Broncos Nike Vapor Elite Game Football.
