Seventeen‑year‑old senior Odin Hensley collapsed on the field, was quickly airlifted to Dell Children's Medical Center, and later succumbed to his injuries. The sudden loss sent shockwaves through the campus, the surrounding neighborhoods, and the broader Texas football community.
In the wake of Hensley's death, Lake Travis and its longtime rival Dripping Springs jointly decided to cancel the varsity football game that had been slated for August 28. Administrators explained that the decision was made after careful consideration of the physical and mental well‑being of players, staff, and families, emphasizing that the priority must be healing rather than competition.
While the varsity contest was called off, both schools agreed to allow freshman, junior varsity and other lower‑level teams to continue controlled scrimmages with one another.
