A new chapter for Eastern soccer
The Eastern men’s soccer Panthers are preparing for what many expect to be a transformative season, marking the second year of head coach Ruy Vaz’s tenure. After finishing sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference last year and exiting the tournament in the first round, the program is determined to translate its new culture into on‑field results.
Vaz arrived with a clear vision: to build a Division‑One‑ready identity by blending a handful of returning veterans with a large influx of talent from the transfer portal. The coaching staff brought in 26 new players, reshaping the squad’s depth and competitive edge.
Among the most notable additions are junior forward Keiden Green, who arrives from the Cascade Collegiate Conference where he topped the league in scoring with 12 goals and 17 assists, and midfielder Carmelo Bello, a Cowley College product who posted 15 goals and 20 assists before joining Eastern. Both players are expected to fill key offensive roles left by departed stars.
Returning contributors such as Adam Boykin and Gui Gragnano add experience to the attack, having combined for six goals last season. Gragnano’s half‑goal contribution during a five‑game unbeaten streak helped the team reach the postseason, underscoring the value of continuity.
The schedule reflects an aggressive regional approach. Eastern will host matches in Texas against Edinburg, Houston Christian and Incarnate Word, while also facing Western Illinois, SIUE and Southern Indiana. The season opener is set for Thursday at Omaha with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff, followed by a doubleheader with the EIU women’s soccer team at Lakeside Field.
Beyond the roster and schedule, the program’s primary objective is to solidify its game model and defensive structure. Vaz emphasizes a balanced approach that blends attacking flair with a disciplined back line, aiming to climb the OVC standings and contend for a tournament berth that eluded them last year.
