Milestone Roster Unveiled
Northern Michigan University's men's hockey program has revealed its roster for the upcoming 2026‑27 season, a move that coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Wildcats' inaugural campaign. The announcement underscores a deliberate effort to deepen the squad, increase competitiveness and raise the overall skill level.
The incoming class blends experience with fresh talent, featuring six transfers and eight newcomers who bring a range of backgrounds from NCAA Division I to junior leagues. Players have previously competed in conferences such as the NCHC, CCHA, ECAC, AHA and USports, as well as in the CHL, USHL and various Canadian junior circuits.
Among the transfers, defenseman Noah Houle arrives from Clarkson and Lindenwood, bringing NCAA pedigree and a reputation for strong two‑way play. Forward Branden Piku, a senior with 93 collegiate appearances and 44 points, joins from Lake Superior State where he led the team in goals and assists. Brendan Lamb, a junior offensive catalyst from Mercyhurst, adds depth after a prolific USHL career, while Reilley Kotai, a sophomore from UBC, topped the SJHL scoring charts with 77 points.
The freshmen contingent includes defenseman Ian Engel, a Robertson Cup champion with the Bismarck Bobcats, and forward Merril Steenari, a former Johnny Gaudreau finalist in the USHL. Defenseman Jason Davenport, recently named defensive player of the year by the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL, rounds out a group praised for size, speed and offensive upside.
The Wildcats will open the season at the Berry Events Center against the University of Miami (Ohio) on October 2‑3, 2026, before hosting Stonehill on October 16‑17 following a trip to Michigan State. The schedule sets the tone for a year in which the program celebrates its half‑century milestone while aiming to contend at the highest level.
