Charlie Stevens, a former Spurs scouting coordinator with deep NBA experience, was appointed general manager of the University of Connecticut’s men’s basketball program on August 19, 2026. The hiring marks a departure from traditional collegiate pathways, as Stevens arrives without a Division I playing or administrative résumé but with a decade‑long immersion in professional basketball operations.
Stevens’ basketball journey began at York Preparatory School in Manhattan, where he captained a four‑year varsity team that reached the NYSAIS quarterfinals in 2016. He then played at Division III Clark University, emerging as a three‑point specialist who shot 38 percent from beyond the arc. His senior season was cut short by the COVID‑19 pandemic, and he graduated in 2021 with a political science degree.
After college, Stevens entered the Spurs front office, quickly rising to director of grassroots scouting. Over five years he contributed to player evaluation, international scouting trips, and the development of analytical frameworks that blended traditional scouting with data‑driven insights. Earlier stints included internships with Excel Sports Management and the Israeli club Ironi Nes Ziona BC, experiences that broadened his global perspective.
UConn also announced the hiring of Andrew Hurley as assistant general manager. The son of head coach Dan Hurley, Andrew brings a familial tie to the program and will work alongside Stevens to shape the roster, coordinate fundraising, and navigate the evolving landscape of college basketball’s name, image and likeness (NIL) deals.
