The 2026 Black College Football Player of the Year watch list spotlights six standout athletes from Mississippi, with four representing Jackson State and two from Alcorn State. The honor, created to celebrate the achievements of past trailblazers and future stars, pays tribute to Deacon Jones, the legendary HBCU player whose career spanned eight Pro Bowls and two Hall of Fame inductions.
A Legacy of Excellence
Deacon Jones, an eight‑time Pro Bowler and inductee of both the Black College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, remains a benchmark for greatness among HBCU athletes. His legacy fuels the annual award that recognizes outstanding performance and potential on the field.
Among the nominees, Jackson State offensive lineman Quaveon Davis helped the Tigers finish second in the FCS for rushing offense in 2025, posting a 2025 grade of 88% and allowing just 1.5 sacks. Wide receiver Joanes Fortilien contributed 37 receptions for 565 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2024, earning All‑SWAC honors for his playmaking ability.
Redshirt junior Nate Rembert, also from Jackson State, led the team with 45 catches and 750 yards during the 2025 season, drawing attention for his reliable hands and route precision. Defensive back Kam Sallis started 11 games, tallying 53 tackles, including 27 solo stops, and securing two interceptions.
Alcorn State’s offensive line anchor, Cameran Rogers, played a pivotal role in quarterback Jaylon Tolbert’s success, enabling the team to average 24.25 points per game. Defensive lineman Eric Thomas Jr. added 26 tackles and four sacks, ranking second on the team in that category.
The award, first presented in 2016, selects four finalists each year from the watch list and will announce the winner at the 2027 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl in Atlanta. The ceremony continues to spotlight the rich talent pool emerging from Mississippi’s HBCU programs.
