Opening night woes
The Reed City boys soccer team opened its season with a 7‑0 defeat at the hands of Kalkaska on Wednesday, a result that underscored the stark contrast between the two squads.
Kalkaska’s Blue Blazers surged ahead early, finding the back of the net four times before the halftime break and adding three more after the break, a barrage that left the visitors scrambling.
Scoring contributions came from Scott Urquhart, Asher Guggemos and Kaden Fischer, each netting two goals, while Dylan Smith preserved a clean sheet with a shutout performance.
Reed City’s lone highlight arrived when goalkeeper Phoenix Krugler made a series of saves, though a prime opportunity slipped away as Ryker Esper’s shot rattled wide of the post.
The team was further hampered by a shortage of players, dressing only 12 out of a planned roster due to an injury‑related substitution, a factor that limited tactical options.
Looking ahead
Coach John Beam, who oversees a squad dotted with five freshmen, said the experience will be valuable as the team prepares for its next test.
Reed City is slated to meet Northern Michigan Christian in McBain on Friday, August 21, in the Comet Cup, a match that will test the young side’s resilience.
