Jackie Laird, an 84‑year‑old former Biloxi High School basketball coach, died recently, leaving behind a legacy that intertwines with the fabric of Mississippi basketball.
Born in the small town of Bassfield, Laird honed his skills at the University of Southern Mississippi before returning to the Gulf Coast to lead the Biloxi High program for 25 seasons. During that time he captured back‑to‑back state championships in 1988‑89 and 1989‑90, along with numerous district titles, cementing his status as one of the region’s most successful coaches.
Beyond the trophies, Laird was known as a mentor and father figure to countless athletes. His wife, Nancy Laird, whom he has been married to for 62 years, survives him, sharing in the outpouring of memories from players, colleagues, and community members.
