A Defensive Upgrade for Kentucky
Franck Kepnang, a seven‑foot center who spent the last season polishing his defensive craft at Washington, is set to don the blue and white of the Kentucky Wildcats this fall, backing up star big man Malachi Moreno.
During his collegiate stint with the Huskies, Kepnang posted modest offensive numbers — 6.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game — while shooting 51.5% from the field, but it was his defensive impact that drew attention, earning him the highest defensive rating on the team at 3.17.
The Wildcats have been plagued by gaps in rim protection and rebounding, and Coach Pope believes Kepnang’s physical presence can close those holes, especially against smaller, less imposing opponents in the SEC.
Beyond raw numbers, the veteran brings a quiet locker‑room influence; teammate Zoom Diallo has publicly praised the newcomer’s mentorship, noting that Kepnang’s experience and work ethic set a standard for the younger roster.
Health has been a recurring question mark in Kepnang’s career, with past injuries raising concerns about durability, yet Pope remains confident that, when fully fit, the center could become one of the conference’s most feared shot‑blockers.
If he stays on the court, his lockdown defense and ability to control the glass could reshape Kentucky’s interior game, giving the Wildcats a tangible edge as they chase a deeper run in the SEC tournament.
