A New Era for Huskies Basketball
Charlie Stevens, a former Spurs player engagement and scouting coordinator, was named the first general manager of the University of Connecticut men’s basketball program on August 19, 2026, bringing a blend of NBA‑level operations and grassroots scouting to the role.
Stevens played at Division III Clark University, where he became known as a three‑point specialist, shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc and completing 14 of 15 games without attempting a two‑pointer.
His senior season was cut short by the COVID‑19 pandemic, and he graduated in 2021 with a degree in political science, an education that later informed his analytical approach to roster construction.
After college, Stevens entered the San Antonio Spurs front office, quickly rising to director of grassroots scouting, where he focused on evaluating high school and college talent. He also completed summer internships with the basketball agency Excel Sports Management and the Israeli club Ironi Nes Ziona BC.
His network includes former UConn standouts Stephon Castle and Tarris Reed Jr., both members of the Spurs’ 2024 NBA Finals roster, giving him a direct pipeline to recent Huskies alumni.
A native of the Bronx, Stevens starred at York Preparatory School, leading the team to the NYSAIS quarterfinals in 2016 before pursuing his college career at Clark University.
UConn also appointed Andrew Hurley, a former Huskies player and graduate assistant, as an assistant general manager. Hurley’s experience in scouting and roster management is expected to complement Stevens’ NBA‑level perspective.
Head coach Dan Hurley highlighted the significance of the general manager role in modern college basketball, noting that Stevens’ blend of scouting acumen and player development fits the program’s evolving needs.
The appointments reflect UConn’s strategy to construct a front office capable of navigating the complexities of roster construction, fundraising, and competitive recruitment in today’s landscape.
