Championship pedigree meets player development
On August 20, head coach Mike Hastings unveiled a trio of additions to the Wisconsin men’s hockey coaching staff, each bringing a distinct blend of championship pedigree and professional experience. The moves are designed to reinforce player development and elevate the team’s competitive edge as the program looks ahead to the upcoming season.
Joe Pavelski, a United States Hockey Hall of Famer and two‑time Olympian, retired after an 18‑year NHL career that produced 1,068 points in 1,332 games. He helped Wisconsin capture the 2006 national championship, served as captain of that team, and remains the NHL’s all‑time American playoff goal leader with 74. His leadership qualities and ability to connect with players were highlighted by Hastings as a cornerstone for the new development role.
Andy Brandt returns to Madison after stints as an assistant under Tony Granato and as head coach and general manager of the Madison Capitols in the USHL. Under Brandt’s guidance, the Capitols reached the conference finals and the club captured the 2025 World Junior A Challenge title. His familiarity with the program and proven coaching acumen make him a natural fit for the expanded staff.
Steve Briere joins as director of goaltending development, bringing 12 seasons of NHL goaltending coaching experience. He previously shaped the net‑minders for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Seattle Kraken, where he worked under Mike Hastings during the Kraken’s inaugural years. Briere’s expertise is expected to deepen the team’s goaltending pipeline and refine training methodologies.
The three hires collectively infuse the program with a wealth of championship experience, NHL insight, and proven leadership. By leveraging the backgrounds of Pavelski, Brandt, and Briere, the Badgers aim to accelerate player growth, enhance strategic depth, and maintain a strong competitive posture in collegiate hockey.
