Louisville Youth Baseball League Gets Community Boost to Revamp Contaminated Fields

Volunteers, local leaders and sponsors rally to create safe, inclusive play spaces for kids ahead of spring season

The baseball diamonds at Lannan Park in Louisville have long been plagued by trash, human waste and needles, turning a youthful pastime into a health hazard for the kids who gather there.

Community Mobilization

Mike Mulrooney, founder of Shirley's Way, has taken the lead in renovating the dugouts, installing locks to deter drug use and adding new roofs, fresh paint and security measures to protect the spaces.

Councilwoman Donna Purvis secured a $10,000 allocation to replace the dirt on the fields, while a donated refrigerator and ice machine have revived the concession stand, improving accessibility for participants.

The initiative also includes plans to convert an adjacent vacant lot into a third field, allowing the league to expand its free youth baseball program. Organizers aim to sponsor 150 children, with more than 130 already signed up for the upcoming spring season.
