Boston University’s women’s soccer team fell to a 5‑2 defeat against Fairfield on Thursday evening at Lessing Field, a match that swung back and forth before the Stags pulled ahead in the closing stages.
The game opened with Fairfield controlling early possession, but BU struck first when senior forward Olivia Avellar found the net in the 20th minute, her opening goal of the season, after a quick combination with Samantha Aronson and Jaiden Schultz.
Between the goals, Bridget Carr was busy between the posts, making six saves, five of them in the first half, and even denying a Fairfield strike just 43 seconds into the contest. A BU goal that had seemed to equalize at the ninth minute was later ruled offside, leaving the Terriers still ahead.
Fairfield’s persistence paid off midway through the second half when a corner kick found the net, tying the contest at 2‑2. BU answered shortly after with a goal in the 71st minute, leveling the score before the Stags rallied again.
A video review confirmed a goal for Fairfield in the 77th minute, shifting momentum, and another strike in the 80th minute put them up 4‑2. With just minutes left, a handball penalty was awarded against BU, and Fairfield converted the spot‑kick to seal a 5‑2 victory.
Statistically, Fairfield outshot BU 14‑13 and earned four corners to the Terriers’ five, while Carr’s six saves marked one of her strongest performances in recent memory.
What’s Next for the Terriers?
The upcoming match against UConn presents a chance for BU to adjust its strategy and rebuild confidence after a challenging night at Lessing Field. Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday at 7 p.m., and the team hopes to translate the lessons learned into a stronger showing.
