The University of North Carolina Wilmington women's soccer squad opened its season with a hard‑fought 2‑1 win against Old Dominion on Thursday night, turning a early setback into a decisive victory.
A Resilient Start
Allie Planeaux broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, and Hailey Longwell extended the lead in the 76th minute, giving the Seahawks a 2‑1 advantage that they would protect for the remainder of the match.
Old Dominion had struck first in the eighth minute, but the team’s composure shone through as they responded with two quality strikes and never looked back.
Goalkeeper duo Zoë Anderson and Lili White combined for three crucial saves against four shots on target, preserving the narrow margin and showcasing the defensive stability praised by head coach Chris Neal.
Neal highlighted the squad’s response to early mistakes, noting that the players’ spirit and unity were evident throughout the contest and set a positive tone for the weeks ahead.
The Seahawks will next travel to face Georgia Southern on Sunday, August 23, at 1 p.m. EST, with the match streamed live on ESPN+.
