A Night of Baseball and Conservation
The San Antonio Missions and the San Antonio Zoo are set to co‑host a special evening on August 22 at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium, turning a regular baseball game into a celebration of wildlife.
The event marks the inauguration of Congo Falls, a two‑acre gorilla habitat that the zoo has built to provide a richer environment for its primate residents.
Players will take the field wearing custom jerseys that echo the lush greens and earthy tones of the new exhibit, and those garments will be auctioned off after the game to raise additional funds for conservation.
Central to the night’s mission is the Gorillas on the Line campaign, which encourages fans to bring old electronics to a recycling kiosk set up at the stadium; the reclaimed devices help offset the mining of minerals that threaten gorilla habitats across Central Africa.
A limited‑edition Missions gorilla plushie will be bundled with a special ticket package, giving attendees a tangible reminder of the cause while they enjoy the game.
Zoo staff will lead a series of pre‑game activities, including a ceremonial first pitch and appearances by Savanna, the zoo’s mascot, to draw younger fans into the conservation message.
Supporting Global Gorilla Protection
The post‑game fireworks show, sponsored by Bud Light, will light up the sky as a festive finale, underscoring the partnership between sport, industry and environmental stewardship.
Fans attending the game will also have the opportunity to learn more about the campaign through signage and staff, turning the stadium into an educational hub for a cause that extends far beyond the city limits.
With the Missions facing the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at 7:05 p.m., the evening promises both competitive baseball and a powerful reminder of how everyday actions can help protect endangered species worldwide.
