A Narrow Contest in South Carolina
The VMI women's soccer squad traveled to Rock Hill, South Carolina, where they faced Winthrop in a tightly contested match that ended in a 1‑0 defeat.
Winthrop broke the deadlock early in the second half, with Mia Silber finding the back of the net at the 51st minute after a solo run that left the VMI defense scrambling.
Despite creating six shot attempts, the Keydets were outshot by Winthrop, who managed nine efforts on goal; Winthrop's goalkeeper made three saves while VMI's keeper, Maren Ryberg, tallied four.
Winthrop earned five corner kicks compared with VMI's three, and the attacking load was shared among the Eagles' forwards, with Cordelia McIntosh and Ashley Ross each firing five shots and Silber adding four of her own.
Sophomore Mackenzie Hobik emerged as the most prolific shooter for VMI, directing two attempts on goal, but the team will now turn its focus to a home encounter with Longwood scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m.
