Akron's Road Victory Over Southern Indiana
On August 20, the Akron Zips traveled to Strassweg Field to face Southern Indiana University, emerging with a 2‑1 win that improved their early season record to 2‑0‑0. The match marked the Zips’ second straight victory and set the stage for upcoming contests against Duquesne and Louisville.
Grace Shondel opened the scoring in the 66th minute, converting a pass from Eesha Sutharshan to put Akron ahead. The goal came after a period of sustained pressure that saw the Zips dominate possession and generate multiple chances.
Southern Indiana answered quickly, leveling the contest in the 68th minute. However, Akron’s resolve held, and in the 82nd minute Callee DalBon struck the decisive blow, finishing a move assisted by Hattie Yugovich and Olivia Pilato to restore the lead.
The Zips outshot the hosts 6‑of‑9 on target compared with Southern Indiana’s 18 attempts, 10 of which were on goal. Goalkeeper Sara Bower was instrumental, making nine saves and limiting the opposition to a single goal.
A single yellow card was issued during the game, and Akron’s defensive organization proved effective despite the opponent’s shot volume. The win not only boosted the team’s confidence but also highlighted the depth of talent across the midfield and attack.
Looking ahead, the Zips are scheduled to host Duquesne on August 27 at 7 p.m. before heading to Kentucky to meet Louisville on August 30. Both games promise further tests as the team continues to build momentum early in the season.
