A Promising Start Marred by Finishing
The Crimson opened their 2026 campaign on a humid evening in South Florida, where they faced the Stony Brook Seawolves in a tightly contested contest that ended 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
Stony Brook struck first, with Emily Lemke finding the net twice in the opening half, a feat she had also achieved in her previous two appearances, while Harvard’s defense struggled to contain her movement.
Harvard responded after the break, as freshman forward Brooke Huleatt carved through the midfield and unleashed a striking dribble that resulted in the team’s first goal of the season, sparking a surge that included contributions from Molly Vana and Caroline Studebaker.
The midfield duo of Jasmine Leshnick and a complementary partner orchestrated much of the attacking rhythm, feeding the ball to the wings where Amy König and Claire Kessenger provided stability alongside captain Írena Héðinsdóttir Gonzalez.
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Bidun, a transfer from the University of Georgia Bulldogs, made several key saves to keep the Crimson within striking distance, but the team could not break the deadlock.
Despite outpossessing Stony Brook for much of the game, Harvard failed to translate pressure into goals, a pattern that echoed their 0-3-2 start in 2023, and the squad now looks to refine its finishing before aiming for NCAA tournament qualification.
