As August settles over the small town of Clark Fork, Idaho, the high school football team known as the Wampus Cats is already buzzing with anticipation for the upcoming season.
A Fresh Coaching Vision
Andre Johansen, who arrived with a reputation built over 25 years in Northern California, has instituted early morning workouts and film sessions that have already sparked strong buy‑in from the players.
The roster has expanded by roughly ten athletes since last year, with a wave of younger players embracing the new conditioning regimen and showing up ready to lift before school even begins.
Johansen’s experience includes a stint at Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, where he studied a championship‑winning system that emphasized discipline and mental resilience, lessons he now brings to the 1A program.
Mental Toughness Over Muscle
Rather than relying solely on size or speed, Johansen stresses belief and mental toughness, arguing that a team that trusts itself can outlast any physical opponent.
Returning quarterback Mateo Cruz, who also anchored the defense as a defensive end, will lead the offense, while wide receiver Peyton Chapman provides a reliable target; both are expected to drive the team’s offensive rhythm.
Charlie Becker, a state‑qualified wrestler who recently returned from Portland, adds a gritty edge to the line, and tight end Jason Mayora has taken on a larger leadership role in his final season.
A Schedule With Stakes
The Wampus Cats open against Coeur du Christ Academy on August 29, a matchup that could determine the North Star League title, and later face Lewis County, Wallace and Lakeside as the season unfolds.
Beyond the field, Johansen’s wife Valerie, who heads the Sandpoint High School girls wrestling program, was honored as Idaho Girls Head Coach of the Year in 2025, underscoring a family commitment to wrestling excellence in the region.
With a blend of seasoned veterans and eager newcomers, the team aims to stay competitive in every quarter, hoping to translate early training gains into wins when the lights shine brightest.
