A Strategic Getaway
Michigan’s men’s basketball squad is set to embark on a 10‑day European tour that will take them to Croatia and Lithuania for three exhibition matchups. The itinerary is designed not only to test the team against foreign competition but also to accelerate chemistry among a roster that features a wave of newcomers.
The trip arrives with the Wolverines missing key pieces; LSU transfer Jalen Reed is sidelined by an Achilles injury and freshman Lincoln Cosby remains out after ACL surgery. At the same time, six freshmen, four transfers such as Ricky Liburd, and three new staff members have joined the program, giving Coach Mike Boynton Jr. a larger pool to evaluate during the extra ten practices built into the schedule.
Boynton has been clear that the primary objective is process over immediate results. He plans to rotate lineups, test different combinations, and use the structured games as laboratories for growth. “We’re looking at how the pieces fit together,” he said, emphasizing that each minute on the court is an opportunity to learn.
The first contest will pit Michigan against Lithuania’s A‑team on Sunday, followed by a clash with the B‑team on Monday, a side that recently upset Arizona 99‑88. While the outcomes matter less than the experiments, Boynton notes that the B‑team’s recent form suggests a competitive challenge.
Off the court, the team is leveraging the travel experience for bonding. Players like Trey McKenney have spoken about the value of stepping away from campus distractions, noting that shared walks through historic cities and beachside downtime help forge trust that translates to the hardwood.
Beyond basketball, the schedule includes cultural excursions — guided tours of local landmarks, opportunities to sample regional cuisine, and moments to relax on Croatian shores. These experiences, according to the coaching staff, are integral to building a cohesive unit that can carry the lessons learned abroad into the upcoming season.
