Unity Rockets Aim for First State Title in Seven Years

Preseason No. 1 team replaces key graduates with fresh talent and a new quarterback

Unity High School’s 2026 football squad entered the season as the preseason No. 1 team in The News‑Gazette’s rankings, but the roster marks a stark departure from the 2025 championship side. After losing every starter from the 3A state‑title game against Byron, the Rockets are embracing a new chapter with the goal of ending a seven‑year drought without a state crown.

At the helm of the offense is junior quarterback Carter Schmid, who takes over from Dane Eisenmenger, the 2025 All‑Area Player of the Year. Schmid spent last season as Eisenmenger’s backup, completing 6 of 9 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown, and now hopes to translate that limited experience into a full‑time starter role.

Quarterback Transition

The offensive line returns three starters — Hudson DeHart, Cash McCann and Elias Krall — providing continuity and experience up front. Their presence is expected to open lanes for the new skill players who must step into the void left by departed receivers.

Defensively, senior linebacker Keegan Germano anchors the unit after recording 143 tackles last year and committing to Butler. His leadership will be crucial as the defense seeks to replace the production of departed seniors.

The Rockets’ early schedule pits them against Monticello, Bloomington Central Catholic and rival St. Joseph‑Ogden, a quartet of games that could determine whether they capture the Illini Prairie Conference title for the first time since 2021. Hosting playoff contests is also on the horizon, adding pressure and opportunity.

Coaches emphasize leveraging each player’s individual strengths rather than trying to replicate the senior class’s formula. By focusing on development and depth, Unity aims to build a team that can compete for its first state championship since 2000.
