A New Frontier for High School Sports
In just four years, California has turned girls flag football into the state's fastest‑growing varsity sport, logging a 25.4% rise in participation for the third straight year and now counting nearly 25,000 student‑athletes on the field.
The California Interscholastic Federation officially sanctioned the sport in 2022, and the 2026 season marks its fourth year of varsity competition. That rapid ascent has caught the attention of colleges, which are beginning to pilot scholarship programs, while the International Olympic Committee has slated flag football for a demonstration at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, paving the way for a full medal event.
The competitive landscape is already crowded. The Sacramento‑area powerhouse McClatchy Lions sit atop the local rankings at 24‑5 and captured the Division I CIF Sac‑Joaquin Section title last year, thanks in large part to Daisy Throckmorton, the 2025 Bee Player of the Year. Close behind, West Park Panthers rely on veteran quarterback Emily Cory and a deep receiving corps featuring Annalyse Braden, Liv Miller and Kelly Lane, while Christian Brothers Falcons showcase junior quarterback Taylor Jernigan, who has already amassed 6,330 passing yards and 84 touchdowns.
This season the CIF Sac‑Joaquin Section will expand its playoff format from four to five divisions, a move designed to give smaller schools a realistic shot at a championship and to reflect the sport’s widening base across the region.
Beyond the local scene, the inaugural MaxPreps Flag Football Showdown will take place in San Diego on September 11‑12, bringing together elite programs such as McClatchy, West Park and Merced for a weekend of high‑stakes matchups that could further accelerate the sport’s momentum.
