St. Mary’s County Recreation & Parks is set to debut a Youth Roller Hockey program at the Leonard Hall Recreation Center, inviting children between the ages of three and thirteen to experience the fast‑growing sport in a supportive, family‑oriented environment.
Program Schedule
The initiative will run on Wednesday evenings from September 16 through November 4, 2026, with each participant receiving a dedicated hour of rink time split into two convenient windows: 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. or 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Skill Development Tracks
Instruction is tailored to three skill levels. Beginners start on foot before transitioning to skates, while intermediate and advanced players focus on refining techniques and game tactics. This staged approach ensures that every child can progress at a comfortable pace while receiving appropriate challenge.
Gear and Safety
Participants are required to meet specific equipment standards based on their skill tier. Children in the beginner group must arrive with a helmet that includes face protection, a pair of hockey gloves and a stick for their first session. More advanced skaters are expected to bring full gear, including skates, leg guards, an athletic supporter, hockey gloves and a helmet with complete facial coverage. Elbow pads are strongly recommended, especially for those still mastering balance on the ice.
Registration Details
The program carries a fee of $100 for St. Mary’s County residents and $105 for non‑residents, with registration closing at noon on September 10. Organizers have set a minimum enrollment of ten participants and a maximum capacity of forty‑five, ensuring a manageable class size and ample rink time for each child.
