A Rescue That Redefined a Young Athlete
Daveon Bam Crouch, a first‑year linebacker for the Kansas Jayhawks, has become known not only for his play on the field but also for a moment of quick thinking that saved a classmate’s life just three years ago.
On August 17, 2021, while attending Wharton High School in Florida, Crouch witnessed a peer collapse unexpectedly. Without hesitation he began CPR, located an automated external defibrillator, and delivered a shock that restored the student’s heartbeat before emergency responders arrived.
The swift response earned him a citizen’s award from the town of Wharton in December 2021, a recognition that highlighted the impact of ordinary courage in everyday settings.
Crouch’s path to that moment was shaped by the challenges of East Tampa, where his mother, Masha Watts, raised him amid poverty and crime. Football offered a route out, and with the support of a school secretary who offered him a place at Wharton High, he found a safer environment to hone his talent.
At Wharton he led the team to a 9‑3 record as a senior, catching the attention of Boston College, where he committed to play. A quad injury later that season threatened to end his collegiate career, but it also prompted him to consider contributions beyond the sport.
Seeking a new challenge, Crouch transferred to Kansas University, where his family relocated to Lawrence to be near him. The move marked a stark contrast to his upbringing and underscored a broader commitment to community service, a lesson he says was forged in that 2021 rescue.
Now, as he balances training with reflections on kindness, Crouch’s story illustrates how a single act of bravery can ripple through a life, reshaping priorities and inspiring others to look beyond the game.
