A Campus Tragedy
The body of a young athlete was discovered on a Saturday afternoon near the library of Pennsylvania Western University, a short distance from the campus quad.
Investigators say the victim, 18‑year‑old Karoline Heintz, had been a freshman on the university’s soccer team and was last seen leaving a residence in North Strabane with 18‑year‑old Royce Moser, her boyfriend at the time.
According to police, Moser later told detectives that a "demon" had compelled him to stab Heintz in the chest, a claim that has been part of the evidence presented in the homicide case.
After the attack, Moser allegedly placed Heintz’s body in the rear hatch of her car and attempted to drag her away before calling his mother, Rachel Moser, who is accused of helping to conceal the crime by disposing of the murder weapon and cleaning the vehicle.
Both mother and son now face multiple criminal counts, including homicide, tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse and conspiracy, with prosecutors indicating that the cover‑up was deliberate.
Pennsylvania Western University issued a statement expressing deep condolences to Heintz’s family and confirming that counseling services are available to students coping with the loss.
The case has drawn attention to the small town of North Strabane, where residents are grappling with the shock of a violent crime that unfolded just steps from the campus library.
