San José State University announced on August 31 that veteran head coach Simon Tobin would retire after a distinguished tenure that reshaped the Spartans' soccer program. Tobin's departure comes after a career that produced 394 wins, 281 losses and 89 ties, a record that places him among the most successful coaches in program history.
A Legacy of Wins
During his time at SJSU, Tobin guided the team to WAC Tournament championships in 2017, 2022, 2024 and 2025, capturing Coach of the Year honors in 2017 and 2021. His overall record of 87 wins, 101 losses and 37 ties at San José State reflects a period of steady growth and postseason success.
Jesus 'Chuy' Sanchez, who has worked closely with Tobin for several years, will serve as interim head coach. Sanchez brings professional playing experience from the USL and has been with the program since 2018, entering his ninth season as part of the coaching staff.
Joining Sanchez is Jamie Reid, who returns as Associate Head Coach after steering SJSU to back‑to‑back WAC Tournament Finals in 2024 and 2025. Reid's recent work has been credited with developing the squad's competitive edge and preparing players for high‑level competition.
A New Chapter Begins
The 2026 season marks a historic milestone as San José State joins the Mountain West Conference, beginning with a matchup against UC Santa Barbara on August 31 at 7 p.m., streamed live on ESPN+. All conference games will be available through MW+ for fans across the region.
Tobin's retirement concludes an era defined by consistent tournament performance and player development. As the program transitions to a new conference and coaching leadership, the foundation he built promises continued growth and ambition for the Spartans.
