Simon Tobin announced his retirement as head coach of San José State men’s soccer, effective August 31, 2024, closing a chapter that saw the Spartans capture multiple Western Athletic Conference Tournament titles and earn national recognition.
A Legacy of Success
Over his tenure, Tobin compiled a career record of 394 wins, 281 losses and 89 ties, a testament to sustained competitiveness. His teams dominated the WAC Tournament, securing championships in 2017, 2018, 2022, 2024 and 2025, and he was honored as WAC Coach of the Year in 2021.
Stepping into the interim role is Jesus 'Chuy' Sanchez, who has worked closely with Tobin both at Cal State Bakersfield and in the USL. Sanchez brings nine seasons of service to SJSU, including seven as an assistant before his promotion to associate head coach in 2024.
Joining Sanchez is Jamie Reid, who returns as associate head coach after guiding the Spartans to back‑to‑back WAC Tournament finals in 2024 and 2025. Reid’s prior experience at Cañada College and his academic background from Feather River College and Chico State add depth to the coaching staff.
A New Conference Landscape
The 2026 season marks a pivotal moment as San José State joins the Mountain West Conference, aligning with new members Air Force, UNLV, Grand Canyon, UC Davis and Utah Tech. The Spartans will open their Mountain West slate on the road against UC Santa Barbara, a match streamed live on ESPN+ at 7 p.m.
All home and away contests will also be available through MW+, ensuring fans can follow the team’s progress throughout the inaugural campaign in the league.
Beyond the field, the transition reflects a broader ambition to expand the program’s reach and competitiveness. With a blend of seasoned leadership and fresh perspective, the Spartans aim to carry forward the winning culture established under Tobin while adapting to the challenges of a new conference.
