Rutgers University–Newark has named Alyssa Parsons as the new head coach of its women's basketball program, tapping a coach whose career has been built on player development and mentorship.
Parsons arrives after stints at Albright College, Rider University and Stevens Institute of Technology, where she helped guide the team to an NCAA Tournament berth and worked directly with Director of Athletics Megan Haughey, now her mentor and collaborator.
A Mentor‑Driven Leadership
At Albright, she posted a 10‑15 record in her debut season and coached two All‑MAC Commonwealth guards, while earlier at Rider she captained the team three times and later served as an assistant before moving to Stevens.
Her coaching creed centers on what she calls “coaching to the heart,” a philosophy that prioritizes relationships, accountability and the growth of the whole student‑athlete, aiming to prepare players for success beyond the hardwood.
The new staff includes former Division I player Samantha Lapszynski, Division II standout Kaijhe Hall, recruiting specialist Michael Famosa and alumna Elissa Nsenkyire, a blend of experience and local insight that Parsons says will strengthen ties to alumni and the Newark community.
Megan Haughey praised Parsons’ vision, noting that the program will emphasize holistic development and community engagement, while Parsons herself credited her aunt Kate, former Rider head coach Lynn Milligan and General Manager Jada Pierce of the University at Albany for shaping her approach.
The appointment signals a renewed focus on building a program where players feel valued, challenged and prepared for life after basketball, a vision that aligns with the university’s broader mission of academic and athletic excellence.
