The University of Michigan’s football program announced a series of injuries that will shape its preparation for the 2026 campaign. Freshman offensive lineman Ace Hamilton, a 6‑foot‑2, 288‑pound recruit from Clinton, Maryland, suffered a season‑ending lower right leg injury during spring drills, ending his debut season before it began.
Health strategy takes center stage
Alongside Hamilton, junior defensive end Dom Nichols and sophomore offensive lineman Andrew Babalola each dealt with setbacks that kept them out of full‑contact work, while running back Micah Ka’apana also faced a season‑ending issue. Graduate safety Rod Moore and senior defensive end John Henry Daley, however, have progressed through rehabilitation and are nearing full health.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham emphasized that the team’s priority is not merely to replace the missing pieces but to reinforce a culture of stamina and injury prevention. The strength and conditioning staff have crafted individualized schedules that preserve summer gains while minimizing overuse, shifting the focus from pure conditioning to tackling and controlled contact.
With the opening matchup against Western Michigan slated for September 5, the Wolverines are using the early weeks to integrate the healthy returnees and evaluate depth options. The coaching staff remains confident that the adjustments will keep the team competitive despite the early roster attrition.
