The Presbyterian College women's soccer squad improved to 3-0 with a 2-0 victory over Newberry on Senior Night, a performance that underscored the team's early-season dominance.
A Night of Milestones
Emilia Lieber opened the scoring with her third career goal, converting a penalty after a handball in the attacking zone, while Maddie Smith added the decisive strike in the 61st minute, capping a dribble that saw her beat a defender and curl the ball past Madison Gutierrez, the All‑South Atlantic Conference goalkeeper.
Freshman keeper Alexa Garcia earned her first shutout in her second appearance, preserving the clean sheet as the defense limited Newberry to just three shots on goal over the entire match.
The Blue Hose's defensive record stretched to 175 minutes without conceding, a streak that began with the season‑opening win over Alabama State and continued through the latest triumph.
Under head coach Matt Smith, who took over in 2024, the program has recorded nine shutouts, including Senior Night victories over Alabama A&M and Southern Wesleyan, positioning Presbyterian among the two Big South teams sitting at 2‑0 in conference play.
The win also coincided with a sweep of Big South weekly awards, with Smith earning Offensive Player of the Week, Sydney Stoner recognized on defense and Katy Verdery honored as Freshman of the Week.
Looking ahead, the team will travel to the Upper Midwest for matches against the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State, continuing a schedule that tests their depth early in the season.
