Pat Duquette, the head coach of the UMass Lowell River Hawks, announced the addition of Nick Schmidt to his staff ahead of the 2026‑27 season. Schmidt, who brings nearly a decade of coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels, will serve as an assistant coach.
Schmidt’s résumé includes stints at St. Bonaventure University, where he helped the team advance to the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship, and Bryant University, a program that captured both the America East regular‑season and tournament titles in 2025. His contributions earned him a spot on the America East Coaching Staff of the Year for that season.
Prior to those roles, Schmidt honed his craft at Putnam Science Academy, the NY Jayhawks, and Catholic University, building a reputation for player development and strategic acumen.
A Family Legacy in Coaching
The appointment also underscores a deep‑rooted basketball lineage in the Schmidt family. Their father, Mark Schmidt, directs a Division I program, while brother Mike Schmidt heads the coaching staff at Putnam Science Academy.
Schmidt holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Alfred University and an MBA from St. Bonaventure, credentials that complement his on‑court expertise.
