Tulsa Oilers Secure Caleb Huffman Ahead of New Season
The Tulsa Oilers have announced the addition of defenseman Caleb Huffman, a move that reinforces the club’s blue line as it prepares for the upcoming ECHL campaign.
Huffman’s most recent stint with the Evansville Thunderbolts culminated in a championship in the SPHL, where he logged four points in twelve playoff appearances, showcasing his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively.
The transaction saw the Oilers acquire Huffman from the Macon Mayhem in exchange for forward Cooper Fensterstock, a deal that reflects the team’s strategy to trade depth for proven playoff experience.
A Look at Huffman’s Development Path
Prior to his professional career, Huffman honed his skills at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, where he recorded sixteen points in twenty games, and earlier still he represented the University of Alaska‑Anchorage in a 42‑game NCAA stint.
His college trajectory began on the West Coast, with a two‑year period at Simon Fraser before he transferred to Alaska, where he accumulated a total of nineteen points across two seasons, laying a foundation for his later professional pursuits.
Huffman also spent time in the ECHL with the Wichita Thunder during the 2024‑25 season, appearing in six games before returning to the SPHL, where his impact was felt most acutely during the championship run.
Coach Dave Strader expressed confidence that Huffman’s blend of size, skating and offensive upside will complement the Oilers’ existing defensive core, noting that the player’s versatility could allow for more dynamic pairings.
The move comes as the Oilers aim to improve upon a season that saw them narrowly miss the playoffs, with management emphasizing the need for a more physical presence on the ice.
From the crisp rinks of Alaska to the bustling arenas of the SPHL, Huffman’s journey reflects a steady climb through North American minor hockey, marked by incremental improvements in both defensive reliability and point production.
With the roster now set, the Oilers will open training camp in early September, where Huffman is expected to compete for a regular spot in the lineup, potentially pairing with veteran defensemen to form a more balanced unit.
