Early Season Challenges
Bell County opened its campaign with a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Whitley County. Junior forward Kyra Ho found the back of the net, while senior playmaker Lyla Scearse logged an assist. Veteran goalkeeper Ella Pruette faced 16 shots and made a dozen saves, but the effort fell short.
The junior varsity squad responded with a 5-4 victory, highlighted by eighth‑grader Maddie Thompson’s four goals and a score from freshman Gracelynn Burchfield. Assists came from Caylee Masingo, Skylen Mangum, Chloe McGeorge and Gracie Hall, and freshman keeper Kharis Johnson stopped 13 attempts.
Looking Ahead
Middlesboro’s season began with a 1-1 stalemate against Corbin after two games were called off because of inclement weather. The Lady Jackets later fell 3-2 to Cumberland Gap, with sophomore Chloe Brown netting two goals and Abby Jackson adding the team’s lone strike. Senior keeper Jenna Baker recorded five saves, while junior Lily Partin contributed two more.
Both programs now turn their attention to district competition. Bell County is scheduled to host Harlan County on Tuesday, entering the match with a 0‑1‑1 record, while Middlesboro prepares for a home clash with South Laurel on Monday.
The upcoming district fixtures promise tighter contests as both teams aim to climb the standings. Coaches are emphasizing defensive organization and capitalizing on the offensive spark shown by their younger players.
