A new chapter for Kalamazoo’s ice rink
The former Wings West ice rink in Kalamazoo, Michigan, has been transformed into BIGGBY COFFEE Ice Cube Kalamazoo, reopening its doors to the public after a strategic acquisition by Black Bear Sports Group.
The facility now boasts two ice surfaces, with one already operational and the second slated to open within weeks following renovations.
The reopening event on August 22, 2026, drew families, local skaters and community leaders, marking a symbolic shift from the rink’s previous ownership to a model that emphasizes inclusive pricing and broad accessibility.
Addressing affordability and community access
Concerns about rising costs in youth hockey had previously prompted the Kalamazoo Optimist Hockey Association to voice apprehension after being evicted from the premises in early 2026. Executive Director Matt Kakabeeke highlighted these challenges before a congressional panel, underscoring the need for affordable recreational spaces.
Black Bear Sports Group’s leadership says the new management will prioritize competitive rates, ensuring that skaters from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds can enjoy the ice without financial strain.
The company also plans to foster partnerships with local schools, youth organizations and community groups, aiming to make the rink a hub for both sport and social connection.
While the second rink awaits its grand opening, the current space already hosts public skate sessions, coffee service from BIGGBY COFFEE and occasional events that blend the brand’s café culture with winter recreation.
Local officials and stakeholders have expressed cautious optimism, noting that the redevelopment could set a precedent for other mid‑size ice facilities facing similar transitions.
