Ryan Icart, 18, Dies After Blood Clot Complication

The Valley Stream Central graduate was set to begin college before his sudden death, leaving a community mourning

Ryan Icart, an 18‑year‑old senior at Valley Stream Central High School, was weeks away from stepping onto a college campus when his life was cut short by a sudden blood clot.

According to his father, Ricardo Icart, the clot formed in Ryan’s left foot and triggered a cascade of complications that led to a fatal heart rhythm disturbance. A routine check‑up had sent him to the emergency room because his heart rate was abnormally high, and despite a brief period of apparent recovery, the young athlete collapsed early Sunday morning after calling 911.

Friends and family remember Ryan as a gentle, compassionate presence who delighted in making those around him happy, a trait that shone through his involvement in both football and basketball.

A Community in Mourning

Coach Tom Schiavo, who guided Ryan for three years on the varsity line, described the teenager as an inspiring leader whose work ethic and kindness left an indelible mark on the team.

Standing 6‑3 and weighing 330 pounds, Ryan had been a three‑year varsity lineman, contributing on both offense and defense, and he also found time to play basketball, often swapping the gridiron for the court with youthful vigor.

Although a shoulder injury had forced him to redshirt at Monroe University, Ryan remained optimistic about his academic and athletic future, and he was looking forward to reuniting with his parents, Sara Jean‑Baptiste and Ricardo, as well as his younger siblings, brother Bill and sister Eileen Amadea.

Services were scheduled for August 29, with a viewing at Cecere Fullerton Family Funeral Home and a Mass at Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, allowing the community to gather and celebrate the life of a young man whose promise was cut short.
