Ray Bennett Returns to the Capitals as Assistant Coach

Veteran coach brings 25 years of NHL experience and international triumphs

The Washington Capitals have announced the addition of Ray Bennett to their coaching staff as an assistant coach, a move that underscores the team’s commitment to blending experience with fresh perspective.

Bennett arrives with a quarter‑century of National Hockey League service, highlighted by his pivotal role on the 2022 Stanley Cup‑winning Colorado Avalanche roster. His long‑standing career has seen him navigate the bench of several franchises and contribute to Canada’s international success.

A Storied Coaching Path

His coaching journey includes a stint with the New York Islanders, followed by tenures with the St. Louis Blues and the Los Angeles Kings, where he honed his tactical acumen across diverse rosters.

Internationally, Bennett served as the manager of high‑performance and video analysis for Hockey Canada, a period that yielded a gold medal at the 1999 IIHF Women’s World Championship, a silver at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, and a silver at the 1999 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Before his NHL roles, he guided the Red Deer College team from 1995 to 1997 and spent time with the Western Hockey League’s Spokane Chiefs and Moose Jaw Warriors, while also contributing to the World Junior Hockey Championship Association and the Alberta Amateur Hockey Association.

The Capitals’ coaching cadre now features a mix of veterans such as Scott Allen, Patrick Wellar, Kenny McCudden, Scott Murray, Brett Leonhardt and Emily Engel‑Natzke, alongside newly appointed head coach Spencer Carbery.
