A 16‑year‑old student collapsed during a football drill on the first day of school at Pawnee Heights High School in Kansas, and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Emergency crews arrived around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, and despite resuscitation efforts, the teenager could not be revived.
Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett confirmed that investigators found no evidence of foul play, but an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday to pinpoint the cause of death.

Principal Tina Vondracek issued a statement expressing heartfelt sympathies to the family and the broader school community, promising additional support services for students and staff.
The Pawnee Heights USD 496 district announced that counseling resources would be made available to anyone affected by the tragedy, and that the school would hold a memorial gathering later in the week.
