A Strong Start on Home Turf
The Wheeling Park High School girls soccer squad returned to the pitch after a memorable Class AAAA semifinal run last year, eager to translate that momentum into a strong opening. The team’s first test came against George Washington, a match that would test both their attacking firepower and defensive resilience.
Early in the first half, freshman striker Reagan Ricker opened the scoring with a well‑placed finish that put Wheeling Park ahead 1-0. Senior forward Corin McFarland soon doubled the lead with a header off a cross from Brenna Tipton, establishing a 2-0 cushion before the half‑hour mark.
George Washington answered in the 41st minute, pulling one back to make it 2-1. The visitors added another goal in the 70th minute, turning the tide and forcing Wheeling Park to regroup. Junior midfielder Kailey Swartz and Tipton combined late in the half to level the game at 2‑2, setting the stage for a dramatic second half.
The second half saw Wheeling Park regain control. An own goal by Jefferson early in the period extended the lead to 3‑2, and McFarland struck again shortly after, finishing a move set up by Swartz to make it 4‑2. Freshman Reagan Ricker’s early goal was complemented by a flurry of strikes that saw the home team surge to a 5‑2 advantage.
With minutes remaining, junior midfielder Molly Bradshaw capped the scoring with her sixth goal of the match, sealing a 6‑2 final tally. Jefferson managed two late consolation goals, but the home side’s dominance was never in doubt.
Looking Ahead to the Road Test
The team’s next challenge arrives on Thursday, when they travel to face Marietta. The upcoming away game will test the squad’s depth and adaptability as they look to build on the early season momentum.
