Michigan State is preparing for the 2026 season with a wave of nine newcomers that could fundamentally reshape the program under new head coach Pat Fitzgerald.
A New Era Under Pat Fitzgerald
The secondary will be anchored by veteran presence. Tre Bell, who transferred from Iowa State after a standout stint at Lindenwood, joins the Spartans under coach Hank Poteat, bringing 36 tackles and two interceptions from the previous year. Charles Brantley, a former Spartan who returned after a brief spell at Miami (Florida), adds depth, while safety Devin Vaught contributes experience. The departure of Nick Marsh creates an opening that the new cohort is expected to fill.
Revitalizing the Run Game
At running back, Connecticut transfer Cam Edwards arrives with a 1,240‑yard, 15‑touchdown campaign to his name. Edwards is expected to be the centerpiece of Coach Fitzgerald’s vision for a dominant ground attack, aiming to claim the title of the nation’s most productive rusher.
Strengthening the Offensive Line
The offensive line receives a boost from three major additions. Ben Murawski, who previously blocked for Edwards at UConn, joins the fray alongside Nick Sharpe and Trent Fraley, a Rimington Trophy winner from North Dakota State. Their combined experience and skill set are poised to enhance the Spartans’ pass‑protection and run‑blocking schemes.
Versatile Tight End Carson Gulker
Versatile tight end Carson Gulker, a Ferris State transfer who transitioned from quarterback to tight end, emerged as a three‑time Division II national champion. Last season he caught 34 passes for 548 yards and seven touchdowns, adding a dynamic option to the passing attack.
Key Additions on Defense and Reception
Defensive end Kenny Soares Jr., a former North Carolina State standout with 80 tackles in 2023, is slated to contribute as an edge rusher under new defensive coordinator Joe Rossi. At wide receiver, KK Smith, who caught eight passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns at Notre Dame, is expected to play a key role in the passing game, complementing the revamped secondary.
The season will open on September 4 against Toledo, with an 8 p.m. kickoff at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, setting the stage for a promising debut under Fitzgerald’s leadership.
