A Near‑Miss Turns to a Goal
The East Rochester‑Gananda football program, a long‑standing Section V merger, fell just short of the championship game in 2025, losing in the semifinals. Now the team is setting its sights on a 2026 return, hoping to translate a near‑miss into a title run.
Coach Tim Rose, in his fifth season, has built the offense around a more balanced attack. After a run‑heavy approach the previous year, the return of senior quarterback Robbie Dettman and veteran center Matt Witkowski should provide the rhythm needed to diversify the playbook.
Building a Balanced Attack
Both Dettman and Witkowski are joined by a cadre of experienced linemen, including Nick McCarthy, while Owen Munding, who saw extensive snaps last season, is slated to start at a key position. The depth at these spots gives Rose confidence that the offense can sustain drives without relying heavily on a single back.
Returning seniors such as Daniel Minguela, Andrew Newman and Nick Chiccino add further stability, giving the team a blend of experience and youthful energy heading into the new campaign.
A Schedule for Success
The 2026 schedule reflects a strategic shift toward geographic centralization. Instead of long journeys to distant Class C opponents, the team will face a mix of Class B rivals located closer to Rochester, many of which are re‑joining Section V from independent leagues. This arrangement is designed to reduce travel fatigue and sharpen postseason readiness.
East Rochester‑Gananda last captured the Section V championship in 2024 with a 7‑3 record, only to see its title hopes stall in the semifinals the following year. The program now hopes to capitalize on that experience and the strengthened roster to secure a return to the championship game in 2026.
Coach Rose has emphasized that the combination of seasoned talent and a more balanced offensive scheme should keep defenses guessing. ‘We have the pieces in place,’ he said, ‘and the schedule gives us the chance to prove ourselves week after week.’
