Akron soccer eyes 2‑0 start as they host Army at home
On Monday, August 24, the University of Akron men’s soccer team will welcome the Army Black Knights to FirstEnergy Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff, a game that marks the second contest of the young season.
The Zips entered the week riding a 3‑0 shutout against Dayton, a performance that showcased a balanced attack and a flawless defensive display by goalkeeper Brett Kaminski.
Scoring was spread across the lineup, with Remi Agunbiade, Londen Sears and Jack Sullivan all finding the net, while midfielders such as Matt Dreas and the newly recognized Braden Seel added depth to the midfield.
The coaching staff’s emphasis on depth paid off, as three different players contributed goals and the squad avoided any conceding, a statistic that bodes well for upcoming challenges.
Individual accolades followed the on‑field results, with Agunbiade and Dreas earning preseason All‑BIG EAST honors and Dreas also appearing on the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy watch list, while Mikkel Madsen was celebrated as part of the Atlantic 10 All‑Rookie Team.
Those recognitions come as the program enjoys a lofty preseason standing, sitting eighth in the Top Drawer Soccer poll and twelfth in the United Soccer Coaches ranking, while the team holds the top spot in the Midwest Division of the Big East.
Looking ahead, the Zips will host Wake Forest at the same venue on August 28, a match that promises another test of their early‑season momentum before conference play ramps up.
Fans can expect a lively atmosphere at FirstEnergy Stadium, where the combination of high‑ranked opponents and a roster brimming with award‑winning talent creates a compelling narrative for the program’s ambitions this year.
