A Historic Upset in Tallahassee
The Florida Gators recorded a 3‑1 victory over No. 3 Florida State on Saturday, snapping the Seminoles’ 36‑game unbeaten streak in non‑conference play and ending a decade‑long winless stretch against their rivals.
Kyra Taylor opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after a corner from Mia Gray, and she doubled the lead in the 62nd minute. Despite a golden chance to level the match, the Seminoles could not find the net, with goalkeeper Jayden Emmanuel making four crucial saves.
Montelene Dymond and Ryder Ajeto sealed the win with goals in the 79th and 83rd minutes respectively, while Florida’s defense limited the Seminoles to just one shot on target after the first half. Midfielder Shaneil Buckley, one of 16 new players on the roster, saw limited minutes as the team adjusted to a youthful lineup.
Coach Brian Pensky, in his first season at the helm, acknowledged the setback but stressed the need for rapid improvement. The Seminoles face a road trip to Georgia on September 6 before diving into ACC competition, a schedule that will test their depth and resilience.
The loss also casts a shadow over Florida State’s chase for a second national championship. With only four starters returning from the previous season, the team must regroup quickly to navigate a demanding conference slate and restore momentum toward their title ambitions.
