Mountaineers surge to 3-0
West Virginia University’s women’s soccer squad recorded its third straight victory on Sunday, downing Duquesne 2-0 to open the season with a flawless 3-0 record, the best start the program has posted since 2017.
Sophomore forward Sophia Nickel was the offensive engine, striking twice and adding her third goal of the campaign, while Gianna Koss contributed her first career goal to seal the win.
The Mountaineers dominated possession, outshot the Dukes 13-3 and forced seven corner kicks without conceding a single shot on goal, a performance that earned goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth her second shutout of the season.
Looking ahead, WVU will travel to Princeton, New Jersey for its first road test on August 23, where they will meet the Tigers at Roberts Stadium.
