A Missed Opportunity in New Britain
On a crisp Sunday afternoon, the University at Albany women's soccer squad made the short trip to New Britain, Connecticut, to take on Central Connecticut State University on their home turf.
The match opened with CCSU striking early, as a well‑placed strike in the 30th minute put the hosts ahead 1‑0, a lead they would double just over an hour later when Eve Girardi capitalized on a defensive lapse to score the second goal.
Despite the two‑goal deficit, the Great Danes refused to surrender, outshooting the opposition 19‑13 and generating a flurry of chances that kept the crowd on edge.
Sydney Kofton, a standout for the visitors, tested the CCSU defense with five attempts, one of which found the target, while midfielders and forwards combined for a relentless attacking rhythm.
In goal, CCSU’s keeper Claudia Volino was busy, making six saves that ultimately preserved the clean sheet and denied Albany a comeback.
The loss leaves the Great Danes with a quick turnaround, as they are slated to host Quinnipiac on Saturday, August 29, at 4:00 p.m., hoping to rebound and climb back into contention.
