Their qualification came via a runner‑up finish at the 2025 Men’s Oceania Cup in Darwin, Australia. The team then added a bronze medal to their résumé in the 2025‑26 FIH Hockey Nations Cup, a result achieved after a dramatic shoot‑out victory over Japan in the final.
The upcoming World Cup, scheduled to begin on 15 August, will be staged across the Netherlands and Belgium. Matches are expected to draw massive crowds, particularly in the host nations where the Black Sticks’ traveling support is renowned for its passion.
At the heart of the squad is captain Sam Lane, whose 133 international caps reflect a career built on consistency and leadership. Alongside him, Kane Russell leads the scoring charts with seven goals, while Dylan Thomas and Scott Boyde contribute regularly, forming a balanced attacking core.
