Eagles Snap Historic Losing Streak
Columbia High’s Eagles finally put an end to a 101‑game winless streak that had stretched back to 2015, defeating Greensboro High’s Raiders 41‑14 in a game that felt like a turning point for the program.
Head coach Sammie Coates, a former Auburn standout and NFL draft pick, took over the program in 2024 and immediately set about reshaping the team’s culture. Rather than focusing solely on X’s and O’s, he emphasized player development, morale and a collective sense of purpose.
The roster reflected that shift. After starting the season with just 28 players, the Eagles swelled to 60 participants, a move Coates credited to increased buy‑in and a belief that every participant could contribute to the turnaround.
The game itself began with a 14‑0 deficit, but a series of Raiders turnovers sparked a comeback. By halftime the Eagles held a 20‑14 lead, and they pulled away in the second half with three additional touchdowns, capping the night with a 41‑14 victory.
Coates praised the squad’s relentless effort, calling the win a "blessing" and noting that the team’s consistent work throughout the spring and summer finally paid off on the field.
Looking ahead, the Eagles are set to chase a two‑game winning streak when they host East Limestone High on Friday night, hoping to build momentum as the season progresses.
